The University of Agricultural Sciences-Bangalore (UAS-B) has made a groundbreaking move by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) as mandatory subjects for all undergraduate and postgraduate agriculture students starting from the 2025-26 academic year. This initiative aims to equip students with the latest technological knowledge and integrate AI and ML into various aspects of agricultural practices.
The university has established new departments focused on AI and ML, including data mining, to enhance agricultural education. UAS-B has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung to provide AI and ML training to postgraduate students through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Undergraduate students will benefit from "Hands-on Training" modules, including a compulsory AI component funded by Samsung, added to their final year curriculum.
The integration of AI and ML into agricultural education is expected to have a significant impact on the sector. AI can help farmers optimize crop yields, reduce waste, and predict crop diseases. AI-powered tools like drones can aid in crop monitoring, soil analysis, and pest detection. By analyzing agricultural data, AI can support informed decisions on water usage, fertilizer application, and pest control.
The initiative is a step towards transforming Indian agriculture by equipping future generations of farmers with the skills needed to leverage technology for increased efficiency, sustainability, and productivity. By incorporating AI and ML into the curriculum, UAS-B is preparing students to take advantage of the latest technological advancements in agriculture and make a positive impact on the sector.
