Visa rolls out AI tools to overhaul dispute management in payment ecosystem

The Visa Inc. is introducing a suite of six AI‑powered tools aimed at modernizing how credit‑card dispute resolution works across the payments industry. These tools are designed to handle the growing volume and complexity of disputes — Visa processed more than 100 million such cases in 2025 — by using artificial intelligence to speed up analysis, automate documentation, and improve outcomes for both merchants and financial institutions.

The new tools include systems that utilize generative AI, predictive models, and document summarization to support dispute workflows end‑to‑end. For merchants, features like Visa Dispute Resolution Network and tools for automated representment aim to improve the efficiency and clarity of evidence submitted in disputes, helping reduce manual work and costs. On the issuer and acquirer side, AI models assist case analysis, summarize documentation, and enable centralized dispute management, giving banks a faster and more accurate way to respond.

Visa’s initiative reflects broader industry trends where AI is being deployed to address longstanding operational inefficiencies in financial services. Dispute resolution has historically been slow and resource‑intensive — involving manual review of transaction histories, evidence gathering, and communications between parties — and automating parts of this with AI could reduce friction, cut costs, and enhance customer experience for cardholders, merchants, and banks alike.

While the tools are being rolled out in phases through 2026, Visa executives say the adoption of AI for dispute handling marks a strategic shift toward data‑driven operations in the payments ecosystem. If successful, these systems could become a model for how AI is used in other financial workflows still burdened by manual processes, such as collections, fraud analysis, and compliance.
