Why Many Americans Are Turning to AI for Health Advice, According to Recent Polls

A growing number of Americans are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for health-related advice and information. According to recent polls, nearly one in four U.S. adults used AI for health guidance in the past 30 days. Many users prefer these tools because they provide quick and immediate answers, helping them assess symptoms, understand medical reports, and decide whether a doctor’s visit is necessary.

The main reason behind this trend is convenience. Poll findings show that around 7 in 10 users turn to AI for fast responses, while others use it to gather information before or after consulting a healthcare professional. Busy lifestyles, long work hours, and the ease of accessing AI at any time make these tools attractive, especially for minor health concerns. In many cases, AI acts like an upgraded search engine by summarizing information instead of forcing users to browse multiple websites.

Another important factor is the difficulty many Americans face in accessing affordable healthcare. Younger adults and lower-income groups are more likely to use AI because doctor visits can be expensive, time-consuming, or inconvenient. Some respondents in the surveys said they turned to AI because they could not afford appointments, lacked time, or felt uncomfortable discussing sensitive issues with a human provider. This highlights how AI is being used to bridge gaps in healthcare access.

Despite its growing popularity, trust in AI-generated medical advice remains divided. Only about one-third of users said they trust the accuracy of AI health advice, while many remain concerned about misinformation and privacy risks. Experts emphasize that AI should be treated as a support tool rather than a replacement for professional medical care, as incorrect advice could potentially cause harm. Most Americans still prefer consulting doctors for serious health concerns.
