The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have partnered to establish a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. This initiative is supported by a ₹330 crore grant from the Ministry of Education's "Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India" program.
The center aims to develop cutting-edge AI-driven solutions to support key national health programs, focusing on improving healthcare accessibility and delivery across India. Specifically, it will work on initiatives such as cancer, maternity and child care, blindness, and tuberculosis (TB) programs. By leveraging AI, the center seeks to enhance healthcare quality for remote and marginalized populations through indigenously developed AI systems and solutions.
Additionally, the center will focus on upskilling healthcare providers to effectively utilize AI solutions and enhance their capabilities. Operating as a Section 8 company (non-profit organization), the center will be overseen by a board comprising secretaries from the Ministries of Education, Health, and Electronics and Information Technology. A chief executive officer (CEO) will lead the center, with Prof. Chetan Arora from IIT Delhi and Dr. Krithika Rangarajan from AIIMS Delhi serving as chief project managers.
This collaboration has the potential to transform the face of healthcare in India, making it more accessible, affordable, and efficient. The center will serve as a national resource, open to seeking further funding from private sources and alumni networks, and collaborating with other partners to develop AI solutions. By harnessing the power of AI, the center can drive meaningful change in the healthcare sector and improve the lives of millions of people across the country.
