India’s film industry is rapidly embracing artificial intelligence as studios, filmmakers, and technology companies experiment with AI-generated visuals, automated production workflows, and virtual actors. According to reports highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter, Indian creators are increasingly viewing AI not as a threat but as an opportunity to reduce costs, accelerate production, and compete with Hollywood’s blockbuster-scale storytelling. AI tools are already being used for pre-visualization, VFX generation, dubbing, script development, and large-scale fantasy world-building.
One of the most visible examples is Krishna, an upcoming project from Jio Studios and Collective Artists Network that uses an “AI-native” production pipeline built on Microsoft Azure. The film integrates AI throughout the filmmaking process rather than limiting it to post-production effects. Industry leaders claim this approach can cut production costs dramatically — in some genres reportedly reducing budgets to one-fifth of traditional filmmaking expenses while significantly shortening timelines.
Indian filmmakers and executives argue that AI could democratize cinema by enabling smaller creators to produce visually ambitious content without Hollywood-level budgets. Veteran director Shekhar Kapur said AI could bring “a lot of new filmmakers” into the industry by crashing production costs and expanding access to creative tools. However, industry experts also warn that the biggest challenge may not be technology itself but the shortage of skilled creative talent capable of effectively using these systems.
The shift is also fueling global debate about the future of filmmaking. While Hollywood studios and unions remain cautious due to concerns over copyright, labor displacement, and artistic authenticity, India’s film sector appears more willing to experiment aggressively. Discussions across online AI and entertainment communities increasingly suggest that India’s rapid adoption of generative AI could position it as a major force in next-generation digital filmmaking, especially as AI-generated video quality continues improving at remarkable speed.
