India’s “AI War” Strategy: Sarvam to Boost Defence Prowess

India is accelerating its military modernization by integrating artificial intelligence into defence strategy, with homegrown startup Sarvam AI playing a key role. According to The Economic Times, the government is in advanced discussions to set up a ₹300 crore Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to developing indigenous AI capabilities for defence.

The initiative reflects a strategic shift toward technological self-reliance. Instead of depending on foreign AI systems, India aims to build its own AI models tailored to its military needs. This includes applications in intelligence analysis, surveillance, and battlefield decision-making—areas where AI is increasingly critical in modern warfare.

The move is also influenced by global conflicts such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East, where AI-driven tools like drones, cyber systems, and real-time analytics are reshaping how wars are fought. These developments highlight that future conflicts will rely less on traditional firepower and more on data, speed, and intelligent systems, pushing India to invest in advanced AI capabilities.

Overall, the plan signals that AI is becoming a core pillar of national security strategy. By investing in domestic innovation and building a sovereign AI ecosystem, India aims to strengthen its defence readiness while reducing external dependencies—positioning itself for the next generation of technology-driven warfare.
