The Indian government says artificial intelligence-driven lending models could significantly improve credit access for the country’s MSME sector by helping financial institutions evaluate borrowers beyond traditional credit scores. According to official estimates, AI-powered systems could help unlock a credit gap worth nearly $130–170 billion by analysing alternative financial data such as GST filings, utility payments, bank transactions, and digital payment histories.
Officials believe these AI-based credit assessment systems can especially benefit small businesses, informal workers, and first-time borrowers who often struggle to secure loans due to limited formal credit histories. By using data-driven risk analysis, lenders may be able to expand access to formal financing while reducing dependence on informal borrowing channels.
The report comes as MSME lending continues to grow rapidly in India. Government-backed digital credit assessment models adopted by public sector banks have already supported lakhs of MSME loan approvals worth billions of dollars. Economic Survey 2026 data also shows MSME credit has become one of the strongest drivers of industrial lending growth in recent years.
Experts say AI adoption could become a major growth catalyst for India’s MSME ecosystem, which contributes significantly to GDP, exports, and employment. However, analysts also warn that challenges involving data privacy, algorithmic bias, digital infrastructure, and AI literacy must be addressed carefully to ensure responsible and inclusive expansion of AI-led financial services.
