OpenAI Bans ChatGPT Accounts Linked to North Korean Hacking Groups and IT Workers

OpenAI has taken action to ban ChatGPT accounts associated with North Korean hacking groups and IT workers who misused the platform. The company identified accounts linked to publicly reported North Korean threat actors, including VELVET CHOLLIMA and STARDUST CHOLLIMA, which used ChatGPT for malicious activities.

These groups utilized ChatGPT to gather information on cryptocurrency-related topics and tools for cyberattacks, debug and develop open-source tools, including Remote Administration Tools (RATs) and code for Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) brute force attacks, and craft phishing emails and notifications to manipulate users into revealing sensitive information.

Additionally, OpenAI disrupted accounts linked to a potential North Korean IT worker scheme, where workers posed as freelancers seeking IT-related jobs with Western firms. These workers used ChatGPT to write code, troubleshoot, and message with coworkers, as well as devise explanations for unusual behaviors.

OpenAI's actions demonstrate its efforts to prevent the misuse of its platform and protect users from malicious activities. The company continues to strengthen its safeguards and monitor for potential threats, ensuring a safer environment for users.
